Punjab's environment department gives citizens live, forecast-led air-quality intelligence

VulcanTech partnered with the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department of the Government of the Punjab to turn raw environmental data into a public air-quality service. The live dashboard combines sensor and weather readings, a 72-hour AI/ML forecast refreshed hourly and a province-wide GIS layer, presenting air quality in a form citizens and planners can read and act on.

About the client

EPCCD, Government of the Punjab

The Environment Protection and Climate Change Department (EPCCD) is responsible for environmental protection and climate policy across Punjab, including Lahore. Air quality is a matter of direct public concern in the province, and the department needed to communicate conditions clearly to residents while giving planners a reliable, forward-looking picture. VulcanTech was selected for this programme through a competitive public tender.

The challenge

What needed to change

The department had access to environmental data, but not to a public-facing way of explaining it. A raw sensor feed offers little to a resident deciding whether to spend time outdoors, or to a planner weighing a response. Readings needed to be translated into the standard AQI categories people recognise, broken down by pollutant so the cause of poor air was visible, and placed alongside the weather conditions that influence it. Equally important, a current reading on its own only describes the present. The department wanted citizens and planners to see where air quality was heading, which required a forecast grounded in real-time data rather than a static snapshot. All of this had to be delivered as a credible public service, with a clear channel for the department to communicate with residents.

The approach

How VulcanTech delivered

  1. 01

    Define the public audience

VulcanTech and the department agreed who the dashboard served, residents and planners alike, and what each needed to understand at a glance about current and expected air quality.

  2. 02

    Integrate live data sources

Real-time sensor and weather data were brought together into a single, consistent pipeline, providing a dependable foundation for both the live public display and the forecasting model behind it.

  3. 03

    Model and visualise

An AI/ML forecasting model was developed alongside a GIS mapping layer, with readings presented against the standard AQI scale and broken down by individual pollutant.

  4. 04

    Publish as a public service

The dashboard was launched as a citizen-facing service, supported by a public blog and contact channel that give the department a direct, ongoing line of communication with residents across the province.

The solution

What was delivered

VulcanTech delivered a live air-quality dashboard for the province. Real-time sensor and weather data feed an AQI gauge that reports both the index and its category, colour-coded against the standard six-tier scale from Good through to Hazardous, for Lahore and the wider province. An AI/ML model produces a 72-hour air-quality forecast, refreshed hourly and published as a public chart. Each reading is broken down by pollutant, covering PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and O3, and shown alongside live temperature, humidity and wind speed. A GIS mapping layer places conditions geographically across Punjab. A public blog and contact channel complete the service, allowing the department to publish information and hear directly from residents.

Capabilities

Inside the platform

  • Live AQI gauge

Real-time index and category for Lahore and the province, colour-coded against the standard AQI scale.

  • AI/ML forecasting

Forward-looking air-quality 72-hour forecast refreshed hourly and published as a public chart.

  • Pollutant breakdown

Individual readings for PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and O3 to show what is driving air quality.

  • Live weather context

Temperature, humidity and wind speed displayed alongside air-quality readings.

  • GIS mapping

Province-wide map layer placing air-quality conditions in their geographic context.

  • Citizen communication

Public blog and contact channel for the department to inform and hear from residents.

The impact

Business outcomes

  • Readable public information

Raw environmental data is now presented as recognised AQI categories that residents can understand without technical knowledge.

  • A forward-looking view

Citizens and planners can see expected air quality, not only current conditions, supporting earlier decisions.

  • A direct public channel

The department has its own platform for communicating air-quality information and receiving citizen contact.

  • Live AQI gauge and category for Lahore and the wider province, updated in real time
  • AI/ML air-quality forecast refreshed hourly and published as a public chart
  • Pollutant-level breakdown (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, O3) shown with live weather
  • Province-wide GIS mapping, supported by a public blog and contact channel
